Efrin in Baldur’s Gate 3 (How to Save the Petrified Dwarf)

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3: Ephrin

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Ephrin is a dwarf who was turned to stone by a hag to save him from a fatal illness. We find the man in this state in the basement of a tea house in the swamps.

How to Save

To save Ephrin in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to:

  • Kill the hag.
  • Return to the dwarf.

After killing Auntie Ethel in the depths of the overgrown tunnel, return to the petrified Ephrin.

Important! If you let the witch go and received the hag’s hair as a reward, you won’t be able to save Ephrin in Baldur’s Gate 3 because Auntie Ethel won’t lift the curse from her victims.

As you approach, the petrification of Ephrin will automatically wear off. The man will be very surprised to be alive when you inform him of the hag’s death. He will explain that he came to the witch because of a deadly Laduguer’s Bite.

Next, you need to pass one of two checks in dialogue (difficulty — 15):

  • [Magic] Search for remnants of the hag’s magic.
  • [Medicine] Examine him for symptoms of Laduguer’s Bite.

If your class is Bard, a unique option will appear, requiring no checks.

If you pass the check, Ephrin realizes that his illness was initially caused by Auntie Ethel. The dwarf thanks you for your help and heads back to his family.

If you fail the check, he will simply leave.

Don’t expect any rewards, except for the satisfaction of having done a good deed.

Unexpected Twist

If you have released Auntie Ethel by making a pact with her, or if you haven’t yet reached her and Mayrina but have basilisk oil with you, you can use it on the petrified dwarf.

Basilisk oil is a rare item in Baldur’s Gate 3, but you can find it in Act 1 while visiting the Dead Village.

In the basement of the apothecary, you will find a hidden area where the ancient tome “Necromancy of Thay” is kept. Once you pass the mirror and reach the large laboratory, there will be one bottle of basilisk oil on the table to the left.

Afterward, return to the petrified dwarf and throw the bottle directly at the statue.

Ephrin comes to life but begins to scream in horror since the petrification was meant to save him from death! With the hag still alive, the deadly disease immediately afflicts Ephrin, and he dies on the spot.

There is nothing of value in his inventory except a simple armor and axe. Also, take note of a strange bottle containing an unknown dried liquid at the bottom. Likely, the witch used this concoction to poison the man. Considering the numerous suspicious potions found in the hag’s lair, this seems quite plausible.

It is worth using the “Speak with Dead” spell to ask questions about Ephrin and the witch.

He will tell you that he left his family and children as soon as he learned of his illness and turned to Auntie Ethel for help. The witch turned him into stone and “kindly” placed a bas-relief depicting his family in front of him.
