How to Kill Raphael’s Old Foe in Baldur’s Gate 3 (All Methods)

Baldur’s Gate 3

Rafael, waiting near the Tormovic Mausoleum,

will kindly warn us about a terrible danger within—the devil Yurgir, who must be killed. After this, the quest “Kill Rafael’s Old Enemy” will start. There are several ways to complete it.

Make Him Kill Himself

The easiest way to kill Yurgir in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to use charisma to make Yurgir eliminate himself, similar to how it was done with Malus Torm and Gerrigot Torm.

To make Yurgir kill himself, choose the following dialogue options in order:

  • Stall.
  • Wait, you know Rafael?
  • I’ve had some dealings with that devil. Maybe we can help each other.
  • Let’s share everything we know about Rafael. Maybe we can help each other.
  • Show me your contract. Maybe there’s a condition you overlooked.

At this point, your character may automatically succeed or fail a Wisdom (Insight) check: “The last two lines echo repeatedly in your head. They have a hidden meaning—a condition very difficult to fulfill.”

  • Rafael wants you to kill the Dark Justiciars? But why?
  • [Persuasion] There’s a cunning trick in the song’s words. Your listeners are always your servants. Get rid of them. (DC 16)

If successful, Yurgir’s minions will kill each other, but Yurgir will still hear the song.

  • [Persuasion] This is just the beginning: the elusive beast also hears you, doesn’t it? Kill her too. (DC 21)
  • Correct. Now kill yourself. Then you will fulfill the conditions of the contract and be reborn in Avernus. Free. (DC 21)

If any check fails, a fight will start. The number of participants depends on when it happened. If successful, Yurgir will kill himself, and you can safely loot his lair and bodies.

Defeat Him in Battle

You can kill Yurgir in open combat by choosing the “Attack” option in dialogue or failing one of the checks, or by attacking the devil without warning.

Yurgir is a challenging boss, especially if fighting him along with all his minions and the elusive beast Nessie.

  • Boss Features

Yurgir is immune to fire and poison. He can also go invisible, so stock up on potions or scrolls of “See Invisibility” before the fight. In addition, illuminating effects and area-of-effect spells can help overcome Yurgir’s invisibility and injure him, such as:

    • Volo’s Eye (if you let Volo perform surgery on you earlier at the camp).
    • Minthara’s Mace “Xiannyd”.
    • Cloud of Daggers.
    • Swarm of Locusts.
    • Ice Storm.
    • Guardian of Faith.
    • And others.
  • Choosing the Right Position

The difficulty of defeating Yurgir depends on your starting position. If you find yourself at the bottom, your position will not be advantageous. The nearby beast, Nessie, will attack painfully and create copies.

To defeat Yurgir in open combat, it is best to take the initiative. Instead of going for the elusive beast, turn right from the stairs. You will be on the same level as Yurgir and his minions. Approach in stealth mode and start the battle on your terms.

  • Distracting Maneuver

You can distract the enemies by summoning elementals or a planar servant, giving you time to regroup.

  • Getting Rid of the Beast

It’s best to finish off the beast Nessie as quickly as possible and then move upstairs using: dash, misty step, or flight, and teleportation arrows. As mentioned earlier, she hits painfully and creates her own clones, which can cause trouble.

  • Be Careful with Bombs

Yurgir and his merregons will throw ortonic bombs at you, which explode after a while. Characters caught in the blast radius may fall unconscious or even die.

You can pick up bombs before they explode and throw them back at the enemies. Fire damage doesn’t affect them, but force damage does. Once Yurgir’s health drops below 10, he will throw 12 ortonic hand bombs that will explode on the next turn.

  • Legendary Action

If you’re playing on “Valor” difficulty, Yurgir, like many other bosses in Baldur’s Gate 3, has a legendary action. In his case, it’s called “Blinding Ambush”.

It deals radiant damage and blinds the character for 2 rounds if they try to attack Yurgir or cast a spell.

Peaceful Solution

There is a peaceful way to help Yurgir break free from Rafael’s contract. You need to find the last Dark Justiciar and kill him. You will find him if you destroy the rats in the Sharr temple.

Note that if Astarion is in the party, he will strongly disapprove of this outcome. The elf might even leave the party if your relationship is poor.

Reward

If you kill Rafael’s old enemy, you can get the following rewards from the body of the defeated devil:

  • Infernal Iron—an item needed to cool down Karlach.
  • Hellfire Hand Crossbow—inflicts the “Burning” status on a target attacked from stealth, and also grants the 3rd level spell “Scorching Ray”.

Plus, you can collect “Merregon Halberds” from the merregon bodies—not special, but good for selling.

Regardless of your choice, you will get:

  • Dark Gem—found next to the pile of corpses where Nessie was located.
  • Dark Justiciar Gauntlets—found on crates near the main entrance to the hall. They allow their wearer to deal additional necrotic damage.

Consequences

If you kill Yurgir, he will side with Rafael during the battle at the House of Hope in act 3. You will need extraordinary persuasion skills to turn Yurgir to your side.
