Baldur’s Gate 3: Summon the Unique Familiar Lopata

In Baldur’s Gate 3, players can summon various familiars for combat assistance, but there is a one-of-a-kind familiar – the quasite Lopata.

Unlike other familiars, this one has unique dialogue and interaction possibilities after being summoned.

Be careful not to miss this chance, as you won’t get another one like it.

Where to Find the Scroll

The scroll with Lopata the quasite in Baldur’s Gate 3 is hidden in the abandoned village (Act 1). You’ll need the basement of the apothecary’s house. No need to search for the building, as it’s located next to the rune circle.

Right at the entrance on the bar counter, you will see the book “Apothecary’s Notes”. Reading it will start the quest “Search the Basement”. However, even without this, you can go down to the basement and complete the quest.

Immediately behind the counter is the descent into the basement – a wooden hatch.

Once in the basement, look for a lever among the boxes. It opens a secret door to the local necromancer’s laboratory. It can be additionally revealed by passing a perception check.

In the coffin to the right of the exit, you will find the scroll, but be careful, as other coffins hold unpleasant surprises in the form of zombies. Besides the unique scroll, you will also find an ancient tome in the apothecary’s basement, the reading of which grants powerful spells.

How to Summon Lopata

By default, in Baldur’s Gate 3, the quasite Lopata can only be summoned once by any character from your party.

That is, it works like any other usual scroll – after using it, it disappears, and the familiar named Lopata will stay with you until its first defeat in battle.

Upon using the scroll for the first time, you receive an interesting achievement “On the command ‘Lopata’, children cover their ears”, for the familiar’s rather peculiar and sharp-tongued dialogues.

If you haven’t yet activated the ornate mirror in the basement, the quasite may lie in the dialogue about the purpose of the balsamic ointment, so it’s better not to listen to it in this case to avoid consequences.

Permanent Summon

In Baldur’s Gate 3, there is a way to learn to summon Lopata permanently.

Standard Method

If you have a character of the Wizard class (e.g., Gale) in your party, they can learn the spell from the scroll permanently for a certain amount of money, of course, losing the scroll in the process.

For PC, it looks like this:

  • Right-click on the scroll.
  • In the action window that opens, select “Learn Spell (50 gold)”.
  • After this, the summon spell for Lopata will be added to the spellbook. You can use it whenever you want.

For Other Classes

Previously, learning the summon spell was available to all classes, but only under the condition of making the correct choices in dialogues. This was a bug and was later removed with other patches.

In earlier versions, it worked as follows:

What It Can Do

Unfortunately, this Lopata definitely won’t dig, but it can come in handy in battle.

The cheeky familiar is one of the best and most useful in Baldur’s Gate 3 because, unlike other familiars, it has its own unique abilities.

Besides the usual actions “claws” and standard jumps with dashes, the quasite has invisibility spells until a short rest (without the ability to cast it on other characters) and can also frighten opponents.

Lopata has increased resistance to fire, lightning, and cold and minor resistance to piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage.

Interesting Facts

  • If you summon the familiar in the apothecary’s basement in the deserted village, a unique cutscene will appear where the beast will tell more about its master Ilintot and about the necromancer book in his possession.
  • When talking to Lopata with a dragonborn hero, new unique dialogue options will appear. Since the familiar adores dragons, it won’t lie about the correct usage of balsamic ointment.
  • Sorcerers with the “Draconic Bloodline”, “Wild Magic”, and “Storm Sorcery” subclasses may also get unique dialogues, but in the latter two cases, Lopata risks being displeased.
