Rats in the Temple of Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3 (Releasing Yurgir from the Pact)

Baldur’s Gate 3

Before Entering the Tomb of Torm

The devil Raphael will task you with killing his old enemy Orton. But instead of killing, you can simply break the demon’s pact, and for this, the rats in the temple of Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3 will help us.

Taking the Quest

To free Yurgir from the pact, during the conversation with him, choose the following dialogue options in this order:

  • Do nothing.
  • Wait, do you know Raphael?
  • I had some dealings with this devil. Maybe we can help each other.
  • Let’s share everything we know about Raphael. Maybe we can help each other.
  • Show me your pact. Perhaps there’s a condition you overlooked.
  • Raphael wants you to kill the dark justiciars? But why?
  • [Persuasion] Surely you’re missing something. Let me search here properly. (Difficulty – 16)

Thanks to the successful conversation, you can start looking for clues on how to help Yurgir, as both the demon and his minions will cease to be hostile.

But you can also look for the rats in Shar’s Challenge without talking to Yurgir.

Where to Find the Source of the Rats

Even during the exploration of the area, it’s noticeable that the rats in the temple of Shar behave strangely, running in a certain direction and saying strange things. This is not a coincidence, as it will eventually be revealed.

To find the source of the rats in Shar’s Challenge, you will need to descend to the base of the Night Singer’s column.

Steps to Follow

  • Move to the “Shar’s Challenge” teleport. Go up the right stairs and enter the lift.
  • Descend using it.
  • Upon exiting the lift, on the right, there will be a rocky ledge that is easy to miss.
  • Descend to the area with skulls.
  • Go to the upper right corner, where there will be another descent via a rocky ledge to the very base of Shar’s statue.
  • Head towards the pentagram at the feet of the deity.

During the investigation of the pentagram, a rat will appear, which you can question about who or what they are.

If you plan to help Yurgir break the pact with Raphael, you will have to engage in combat.

Combat Tips

At this point, large swarms of rodents will start attacking you (you will have to withstand several waves):

  • You can close burrows with boxes and barrels.
  • Use spells or arrows with a large area of effect, for example, throw “Alchemist’s Fire” bottles to burn as many rats as possible.
  • When the rodents die, they explode, so it’s better to move away from them at that moment.

After the battle, watch a cutscene where the last remaining rat transforms into the Dark Justiciar Lirthindor.

Even if you try to convince him with the help of Shadowheart to resolve the conflict peacefully, it won’t yield any results, and Lirthindor will attack. Killing him will not be too difficult. Be sure to take his weapon and shield from his corpse.

At the feet of Shar’s statue, near the pentagram, you will find the book “One Becomes Many.” Interact with it. This book and pentagram turn out to be Lirthindor’s pact with Raphael.

The devil turned him into many rats, and Yurgir had to kill all the dark justiciars but couldn’t because of Lirthindor’s pact.

Returning to Yurgir

When you start talking to him, the demon will be glad that he no longer hears the song that constantly tormented him, but things are not so simple.

Rewards for Liberation

Raphael will appear and offer Yurgir a new deal. Before they teleport to the House of Hope, Yurgir will allow you to take what he left in the hall as a thank you.

  • Hidden Merchant.
You can also trade with one of his minions — Merregon the Hoarder, but you must do this before the final conversation with Yurgir. The merchant has food supplies and spell scrolls. He sits by the fire with another Merregon.
  • Unique Items.
    • Dark Gem — Found by the stairs in the hall where you first met Yurgir.
    • Rare “Large Justiciar’s Shield” (taken from Lirthindor’s corpse) — Can knock down an opponent flat with a counter-attack. Additionally, it provides the bonus action “Darkness Shroud,” which will be very useful if you decide to make Shadowheart a Dark Justiciar.
    • Very Rare “Justiciar’s Scimitar” (from Lirthindor’s corpse) — When attacking with advantage, there is a chance to blind the enemy. Besides, there is a special weapon action that deals additional psychic damage when hitting a target.
    • Uncommon “Dark Justiciar’s Gauntlets” — The gauntlets allow their wearer to deal additional necrotic damage. They are on the boxes next to the Merregon merchant.
  • Help in Act 3.
If you decide to invade the House of Hope and rob Raphael, a serious battle with the devil will await you ahead. If you freed Yurgir from the pact, he will join the fight on your side without passing additional checks.
