In Baldur’s Gate 3, Viconia DeVir
In Baldur’s Gate 3, Viconia DeVir is a powerful and faithful follower of the goddess Shar. Meeting her in the House of Grief is the climax of Shadowheart’s personal quest.
Viconia DeVir is another character who has transitioned from the early parts of the Baldur’s Gate series alongside Jaheira, Minsc, and Sarevok Anchev.
Whether to Give Up Shadowheart
During the conversation, Viconia DeVir will offer a deal: give her Shadowheart, and in return, she will provide combat support in the final battle against the Absolute.
You’ll be faced with a choice, each with its consequences and rewards.
Give Up
If you decide to give up Shadowheart, then:
- Shadowheart will be captured and taken to an unknown location. Her further fate remains unknown.
- She will no longer be your companion.
- Almost all companions will disapprove of this choice.
- You will gain Sharites as allies in the final battle. They can be summoned to assist during the fight.
Do Not Give Up
If you decide to complete Shadowheart’s personal quest and refuse Viconia DeVir’s “generous offer”, then:
- A challenging battle with all the servants of the House of Grief will begin. The difficulty lies in the large number of enemies.
- If you previously made Shadowheart a Dark Justiciar and killed her parents, she will become the new Mother Superior after defeating Viconia. The girl will lead the Sharites to assist in the final battle.
- If Shadowheart is a Dark Justiciar, she can convince some Sharites to fight on your side against Viconia.
- You will receive rare, very rare, and legendary items from DeVir’s body.
How to Win
In Baldur’s Gate 3, defeating Viconia is a daunting task due to the large number of participants, especially if you chose the Selûne path for Shadowheart.
1. Preparation for the Battle
For character protection before meeting Viconia, use the “Heroes’ Feast” or “Heroism” spells from priests and druids, or paladins and bards. These will prevent your party from being frightened.
Keep Shadowheart near the door, away from the Mother Superior. During the conversation with Viconia, lie about bringing the girl, and then strategically position your team on the stairs. Only after that start the battle.
If you fail the intimidation or persuasion check, Viconia will attack immediately.
Also, consider using “Potion of Necrotic Resistance” as all Sharites can deal additional necrotic damage to targets in darkness.
2. Shadowheart in Main Danger
At the beginning of the battle, DeVir will cast “Lost Heart” on Shadowheart, causing her to receive critical damage from the Mother Superior.
Furthermore, Viconia DeVir turns Sharites into wolves, which is Shadowheart’s main fear (resulting in disadvantaged attacks). You can prevent transformation by casting “Silence” on the Mother Superior.
3. Area Damage
Try to hit as many enemies as possible with area spells, such as:
- Ice Storm
- Wall of Fire
- Cloud of Daggers
- Insect Plague
- Fireball
4. Fighting the Darkness
Sharites with staffs cast “Darkness” on characters. To counter it, use abilities like “Darkvision” or Shadowheart’s “Daylight” spell.
5. Interrupting DeVir’s Health Regeneration
Viconia can go invisible and restore her health during this time. You need to attack her then.
6. Avoid Grouping Up
The Mother Superior uses the “Divine Intervention” ability, which deals considerable area damage. Keep Shadowheart nearby, as she can also have this spell in her arsenal.
7. Summoned Creatures
To offset the numerical advantage, summon planar allies and elementals without hesitation to distract enemies.
8. Valor Abilities
The Mother Superior can once per round use the legendary action “Sanctuary of Loss”, rendering her immune to damage.
The sanctuary disappears when Viconia attacks, but she can restore it with another legendary action, “Heart Distortion”, which deals immense psychic damage.
Additionally, she has “Radiant Backlash”, allowing her to deal double force damage to characters that attacked Viconia with radiant damage.
9. Whether to Kill Viconia?
When the Mother Superior’s health significantly decreases, she can be talked to again, but nothing useful will be gained from a Sharite.
Therefore, just end DeVir’s life to receive the rewards from her body.
Rewards
You can obtain the following from the Mother Superior’s body:
- Maiden’s Mace—adds poison damage and increases the wielder’s strength to 18.
- Viconia’s Robe—while the wearer is hidden, they gain an advantage on stealth checks. If under the “Shield of Faith” spell, it also grants a +2 bonus to all saves.
- Legendary Shield “Viconia’s Walking Fortress”—grants advantage against spells and allows for a counter-move dealing force damage (the enemy can also be knocked prone). The wielder also gains abilities:
- “Reflective Carapace”—returns projectiles to their origin.
- “Defensive Bonds”—similar to the action of the paired rings “Lover’s Caress” and “Lover’s Embrace”, where the bearer takes half the damage intended for the enchanted one.
- Additionally, the body has the “Key to Viconia’s Private Chest”. The chest is located at the end of the common dormitory near the Shar statue. The most valuable item inside is the key to the reinforced vault #8.
